LEGO® City | 60253 Ice Cream Truck

03.12.2020 - Ice Cream Trucks are unfamiliar in Filipino roads they are rarely seen now, but probably back in the day they were a common sight that roam around local suburbs or barangays.

But due to residential towns in Manila are not that big and well-organised like suburbs they are not as familiar as the ice cream carts.

LEGO of course has produced one set for its CITY range that takes inspiration from actual modern age Ice Cream Trucks that still exist in Western countries. If you’re into populating your very own city diorama this set might be something to look at…

Ice Cream Trucks usual start making rounds in the suburbs during the summer season, since kids needs something to snack on during the sweltering heat which is just about right for LEGO to produce one since majority of the CITY range focus on emergency services and police range that become a repetitive nature.

This set is what the City theme needs to add something different to what could be a ‘food truck sub-brand’ for LEGO since they did produce a Pizza Truck back in 2017. Every year there will be a handful of new models elsewhere in the assortment that offer something new and unique. Set No 60253 released for 2020 is one of those ‘new and unique’ to add to the Food Vendors since there’s not much you see in the City theme that ever serve some icy treats.

Icy Cool Truckee Treats

The Ice Cream Truck contains 200 pieces for the novice LEGO builder there’s something new for anyone building a new set. But for those who are in the know there are no interesting parts here other than the notable re-colour part no. 49311, 1x4x3 brick in dark azure, which was only appeared in only 5 of this year's sets.

When you open and pour down the contents you’ll get two colourful bags, two 48-page manuals, and a sticker sheet that screams for you to apply in every bit part while you put this together. It is needed that you apply all the stickers as the Ice Cream Truck would look bland without those interesting stickers for its personality.

Two Part Build Procedure

When you build the Ice Cream Truck it is divided into two parts since it comes with two colourful 48 page manual for you to follow. The set can be put together by younger kids guided by adult supervision since this is targeted to lower age groups. But when it is completed this model its bright and colourful that’s well-detailed has enough play value that sparks imagination, which offers endless build-and-play fun.

You also have the option to use a digital instruction manual through the “Instruction Plus” app (that you need to download on your phone), since the first part of the manual that has a scannable QR code which is being promoted on this product.

The LEGO Instructions app needs to be downloaded on your phone that can be helpful also to older sets that you may own that has no longer have a physical instruction manual.

The Verdict

It is a fun build and it will only take you less than 15 to 30 minutes for an adult, but for kids it will depend if they need supervision. You get an Ice Cream Truck that brings nostalgia for those who grew up having bought those ice treats or the latest addition to the ever growing diversity of models for your City.

There’s something of a novelty about Ice Cream Trucks since they are not common in the Philippines. Probably in other Asian countries they might be a common sight, but you’ll be surprised that this set is popular which is uncommon on Philippine retail despite being generally available anywhere.

The only part that doesn’t make it accurate is that an adult minifigure can’t reach the window which is a little too high, and he needs to balance on his skateboard to get his sweet treat. But entirely, the set is too cool not to pass up to add to that food truck theme. Probably in the near future LEGO might rethink of adding some more.

LEGO® City 60253 Ice Cream Truck has 200 pieces is now available in the Philippines distributed by Ban Kee Bricks retailed at ₱1,399.75 Pesos (Retailed in Australia at $22.00 AUD | USA at $19.99 USD).
