For the first unofficial #TBBD set review we’re featuring the Volkswagen T1 Camper Van (set #10220). Volkswagen a German car maker popularly known for the classic Beetle (LEGO® also released a set in 2008) is not popular with the T1 Camper Van. But for those who were born in 1970s its connected to the “Hippie Era.”
The Volkswagen T1 Camper Van is designated “Volkswagen Type 2” with different names depends on the body type. It was called the Transporter, Kombi, or Microbus. Some times Bus (US) or Camper (UK). But depends on your perspective its Volkswagen’s first van after the success of the VW Beetle (Type 1), which was introduced in 1950 as one of the forerunners of the modern cargo and passenger vans.
LEGO® introduced the Volkswagen T1 Camper Van in the episode of “LEGO® Design” in August 2011. The designer who was part of the project for the VW T1 Camper Van explains the challenges in building Volkswagen’s iconic van and he explains more details of the design process below:
